Radiant Barrier is an effective way to permanently reduce energy costs. It is a reflective insulation system that reflects heat instead of trying to absorb it. A radiant barrier insulation system is a layer of metalized film facing an airspace.
During the winter months 50-75% of your homes heat loss through the ceiling or roof and 60-85% of heat loss through your walls is radiant. In the hot summer months up to 93% of heat gain is radiant. By installing a radiant barrier in your home, your heat loss will be less in the winter and your heat gain will be less in the summer, saving money on your energy bills. This will also allow your HVAC system to work less and help prolong the life of your units.
Radiant Barrier FAQ:
Where do you install radiant barrier?
Radiant Barrier can be installed over your existing insulation, like a blanket. It can also be stapled under your rafters or crawl space.
Isn’t foiled fiberglass just as good as Radiant Barrier?
No. The foil on fiberglass is in direct contact with the attic floor. Aluminum foils becomes more conductive when in contact with a solid surface.
I already have plenty of insulation in my attic, do I still need a Radiant Barrier?
Regardless of the amount of insulation in your attic Radiant Barrier will help lower your heating and cooling costs. Energy savings range from 10-25% depending on climate, materials used, site, building configuration, family size, lifestyle, etc. Eastin Air will evaluate your home and advise you of your potential savings.
